General Vendors in the spotlight Wedding Bouquets and Wedding Flowers

Professional in the Spotlight – Michele from Floral Edge

I am happy to introduce you to Michele Hill from Floral Edge, our featured vendor for our Vendor in the Spotlight interviews. I’ve known Michele for many years and she is one of our great florists in the Limestone Coast region. Michele is well respected and is always lending her designs and talents to many of our great events in the area. Whether its traditional, contemporary or ‘Green’, Michele and her team can always give you flowers that will stand out and become part of the lasting memories of your special event. I am happy to share with you our Q&A with Michele.

How did you get started in the florist industry?

When I was 16 and working for my dad, the parents of one of my close friends bought a florist in Mount Gambier, and they hired me to deliver flowers after work. As they got busier, they began to teach me how to do arrangements, and I loved it! I worked for five years as a florist in Mount Gambier before travelling overseas, and then spent four years working as a florist in Adelaide. I eventually returned to Mount Gambier and worked for other people, before taking the plunge and opening my own business – Floral Edge – five years ago. I’ve never looked back!

What type of services do you offer your clients?

We pride ourselves on offering a unique, contemporary look with continuous new and exciting designs reflecting the latest flower and colour trends and interior or fashion directions.

We can supply the perfect arrangement for every location and occasion…including weddings! From sophisticated elegance to dramatic modern statement pieces, our signature floral arrangements and accessories will ‘capture the mood’ of your magical event. Combining elegant colours, rich textures and lingering scents, we aim to create wedding flowers which are the perfect expression of you, your style and your venue.

Our stylists will also deliver dramatic centerpieces and unique decorations straight to the ceremony and reception, leaving the wedding party and family and friends to relax and enjoy the moment.

Based in Mount Gambier, Floral Edge is the number one choice for brides across the entire Limestone Coast. We will also deliver your flowers in perfect condition to any destination in Australia if you are planning to exchange your vows further afield. Word is spreading fast, with Floral Edge now becoming a popular choice for brides in Adelaide and Melbourne.

What are some of the latest trends?

Twelve months ago, flowers such as oriental lilies were very popular with brides, but now, the look is very classic or vintage; fuller roses, lisianthus, freesias and tulips. Round posies are incredibly popular, and wrist corsages are making a steady comeback for those brides who want a simple look. Very few wedding parties are sporting tear drop or single stem designs – it’s all about beautiful bouquets!

What inspires you and how do you keep your vision fresh?

I am inspired by everything I see and read – I am constantly studying magazines, books and even newspaper wedding pages to keep abreast of national and international trends. I also attend a lot of short courses with well-known florists – you really need to put yourself out there and constantly strive to improve your work rather than sit back and do the same old thing every day. A lot of brides can be overwhelmed by the amount of choices and decisions they need to make in the lead-up to their wedding day, so many depend on me for direction and advice. You need to be a good listener, instinctive and intuitive. There is nothing more rewarding than having a bride say “I was absolutely thrilled when the bouquets arrived – they were even better than I was imagining!”

Explain how your business is environmentally friendly?

We order market-fresh, seasonal blooms daily in order to minimise stock losses, and recycle all green waste via compost or council collection. All cardboard and plastic packaging associated with wholesale deliveries is also recycled.

We offer a range of recycled paper and packing for flower arrangements, and a weekly or monthly replenishing service – we’ll deliver fresh flowers to your home, office, or workspace and arrange it in your own vase to cut down on packaging.

We also hire out a range of candelabras, table centrepieces and other decorations to make the wedding more cost-effective for brides, and to help cut down on consumption.

As you are planning your event remember the importance of florals and decor. A great florist will make suggestions that will help to make your day a wonderful and memorable moment. Consider Floral Edge for your next event.

For centuries, the rose has been considered the ultimate symbol of love and romance. With their timeless elegance and unforgettable scent, David Austin’s English Roses are possibly the most romantic of all.  Nicole Kidman carried them in her bouquet when she wed Keith Urban…and now Limestone Coast brides can, too!

Floral Edge, Mount Gambier’s most innovative florist, is the region’s exclusive stockist of David Austin blooms. Their ability to create a truly unique design and unforgettable fragrance makes them a perfect choice for brides. Ideal for bouquets, posies, buttonholes and corsages, these extremely versatile roses may also be used to create stylish table centrepieces which continue the theme of the day, complete with a classic myrrh fragrance which is rarely found in roses.

With shades ranging from whites, creams, blush pinks, apricots & oranges, through to deep pinks and burgundies, these are old-fashioned roses at their best, with a character and charm that sets them aside from other varieties. Whether displayed in the bud or as fully open blooms, their unique shape adds a new dimension to the classic, compacted rose posy.

Some of the most charming bouquets are also created by combining David Austin roses with other flowers, herbs and foliage to perfectly complement different styles or themes. For more info on David Austin Roses contact Michele from Floral Edge.
